The main concern whether you are plowing, shoveling, or snow blowing is safety. Any time snow is placed in the right-of- way it is a violation and a summons can be issued. It is illegal to plow snow across the roadway. Plow any windrows of snow that are at the end of your driveway into the existing snow bank. All snow must be removed from the right-of-way prior to the town crew’s cleanup pass. State of Maine law views mailboxes as an encroachment in the public way, put there at the owner’s risk and Municipalities are not legally liable for any damage or repairs to mailboxes due to plowing operations. Please go to the Town of Standish website, http://www.standish.org, click on Links, then Standish Town Code and refer to Chapter 252-25 for mailbox criteria.
Please do not be misled by town trucks riding with their plow and wing up during a storm. They may be going back to Public Works to re-fuel, refill with salt or sand, or perhaps for a truck repair.
The most helpful thing you can do is show patience and appreciation for the road crew. Snow removal is a grueling and time consuming task. We are a small Public Works Department and our crew works until the job is done.
