Welcome to the Town of Standish web site. The Town of Standish is a community of 9,800 residents. Since 1960 it has been the most rapidly growing town in Cumberland County. It is a fast-emerging suburb of the Greater Portland area.

Standish operates under a Council/Manager form of government. As such, it is a municipal corporation with powers provided by a Charter. Town government is comprised of an elected legislative body, the Standish Town Council, an Administration of various Departments which are supervised by the Town Manager, plus numerous elected and appointed boards and committees such as the Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Historic Preservation Commission, Budget Committee, Recreation Committee, etc. The Town Council has full legislative powers except for final ratification of the annual budget. The budget is acted upon at an annual Town Meeting in June of each year.

There are seven Councilors on the Town Council. Four represent areas of the Town while three serve at large. Councilors are elected for three year staggered terms.

The Administration is comprised of the Departments of Public Works, Public Safety, Parks and Recreation, Planning, Land and Building Development, Assessing, Finance and Records. The Records Department is supervised by the Town Clerk.

Law enforcement is provided through a contract with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. Full time Deputies are assigned to the Town under the contract to provide 24 hour per day coverage. Kindergarten through twelfth grade education is provided by Maine School Administrative District (MSAD) #6. MSAD#6 is a quasi-municipal corporation that serves the Towns of Buxton, Frye Island, Hollis, Limington, and Standish.
