The SCC has targeted the following areas for safety improvements: Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety, Child Seat Restraint Inspections, and Transportation Safety.
The first project the SCC was involved with was the Kiwanis Club’s Bicycle Safety Education and Rodeo for second to fourth grade SAD6 students. It was held in May 2001. The SCC provided support for registration, bicycle inspections and check out. Pre- and post-rodeo questions were asked of each participant to determine the success of the rodeo. A remarkable improvement was noted in the number of children who learned how to perform turn signals correctly. Helmets were made available to all students.
The second project focuses on transportation and pedestrian/bicycle safety. A Sebago Lake Village Planning Group has been formed and several community meetings have been scheduled to inform residents of two converging MDOT projects in the area of Sebago Lake Village in Standish. This involves MDOT’s proposed improvements to Route 114 from the Gorham line to the village and a non-motorized trail from Gorham to Standish’s Johnson Field on Route 35. Members of the SCC are concerned for the safe movements of trail users along the 4/10 of a mile on Route 35 to and from the village where they
will likely migrate for refreshments. Visit the Sebago Lake Village Planning Board for more information about their efforts and future meeting dates.
The third project focuses on child seat safety inspections and will be a coordinated effort with Kiwanis Club, Portland Fire Department and the SCC. Presently we have one member of the community trained to perform the inspections. Visit the Health and Safety Fair page to learn about the success of the first fair that was held in September.
Year 2 and 3 goals will be to collaborate with the local snowmobile clubs to provide safety training and with Bonny Eagle High School on student driver education. Standish has a high incident of accidents by inexperienced drivers due in part to the location of the High School within Standish.
