Standish had the distinction of being one of only five communities in Maine to be awarded a "Safe Communities Grant" from the Maine Bureau of Health for the reduction of preventable childhood injuries.
The Public Safety Committee, formed by the Town Council in April of 2000, made the successful grant application. The grant provides a total of $40,000 over a three year period, ending March 31, 2004. The purpose of the grant is to improve the health and well being of children in Standish and SAD6 by reducing the number of unintentional injuries.
