The Town Council has submitted an application to the Maine Department of Transportation for a Transportation Enhancement Grant and a Safe Routes to School Grant under Maine's Quality Community Program for 2012 -2013 for the installation of sidewalks in the Standish Corner area. The proposed sidewalks would connect the George E. Jack School through the emerging business district to the adjacent residential areas.
These Transportation Enhancement and Safe Routes to School Grants, if awarded, could transform the Town's most central village area and would serve the Town in two ways: (1) address treacherous travel conditions within the village center and (2) spur economic development.
The Safe Routes to School Grant, if awarded, would be up to 100% funded by State and Federal funds. The Transportation Enhancement Grant would require a 20% match in cash or in-kind support. Any major expenditure by the Town would be subject to voter approval.
