Boat Registrations

Boat Registrations

All boat registrations expire December 31st of each year.   Boat re-registrations can be processed online.

Boat Registration – Renewals

Bring in your most recent boat registration for renewals.  To renew your boat registration, you will need to pay your boat excise tax (based on the length of the boat, horsepower of the motor and age of the boat), a state registration fee (based on the size of the motor) and a $1.00 agent fee.

Lake & River Protection Stickers (Milfoil Sticker) are required by law if the boat will be used in freshwater.  The cost is $10 for Maine residents, the cost is included in the registration fee.  The cost for non-residents is $45, non-resident stickers can be purchased at the Town Office or online through Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

Boat Registration – New

Private sale -To register a boat purchased through a private sale for the first time, you will need to bring in a bill of sale (the bill of sale should include the sellers name and address, the buyers name and address, the serial #, a description of the boat- length, motor size and year) and the purchase price.  A 5.5% Maine sales tax will be collected based on the purchase price on the bill of sale.

If you purchased a boat previously registered by a Maine resident, you will keep the same Maine registration numbers that are already on the boat.  If there is no serial # or the boat is homemade, a state issued serial # request will need to be completed.

Dealer sale - To register a boat purchased through a dealer for the first time, you will need to bring in a receipt or bill of sale from the dealer (the bill of sale should include the sellers name and address, the buyers name and address, the serial #, a description of the boat - length, motor size and year), also, the bill of sale needs to indicate the sales tax that was paid to the dealer.
