Comprehensive Plan Committee & Process

Why update the Comprehensive Plan?

A comprehensive plan is a document designed to shape the future goals and actions of a community. It outlines a vision for the future, long-range goals and objectives, and an implementation strategy for how to achieve the community's vision over time. The new plan will ultimately become a guide for future growth and development, covering subjects such as, but not limited to, land use, zoning, capacity and expansion of utilities, economic development, transportation, housing, recreation, and regional coordination. The plan will also formulate a direction for effective public policy, master planning, and land use decisions for the future.

Establishing a Comprehensive Plan Committee

The Town of Standish recognizes the importance of a thoughtful and engaged community in developing  a successful update to the Comprehensive Plan and is planning a robust engagement process to enlist community feedback. Public input is critical. Residents, business owners, community organizations, local leaders, regional agencies, and schools can all play a part. The intent of this comprehensive plan update is to continue the community-wide conversation about the future of Standish and to provide opportunities for more thorough discussion of issues and challenges raised during the visioning process. A 9 member committee shall be appointed by the Town Council and must be Standish residents or have significant ties to the community. It is expected that the committee representatives reflect
the diversity of Standish. The Committee shall deliver a plan that meets the requirements of the State of Maine and aligns with the input from the public and stakeholders.
